In a fantastic conclusion to the 2023 MGA major season, our diehard MGA crew of golf fanatics battled through the weather conditions on Saturday and played extra holes on Sunday to complete an awesome tournament.
The true highlight of the weekend was Mr. Stearns’ presence at NGC on Sunday with his family. Once again, it was an absolute honor for all of us to spend the day with a true NGC and golfing legend and cap off the festivities listening to his tremendous stories about caddying in the post-war 1947 Ryder Cup and playing in multiple U.S. Senior Opens. His grandson, Ryan, also hit one hell of a ceremonial opening tee shot off #10!
Before we get to the results, a huge thank you must go out to all those who made the weekend a great success. Thank you to Scotty Kimmel for coordinating with Mr. Stearns (and for naming the Stearns Cup so many years ago!) Thank you to Donnee, Tiffany, Pete, and all the Pro Shop staff for their tireless dedication getting things set up for us. Thank you to Mimi, Christine, and all the F&B crew for the awesome post-golf food and hospitality. And thank you to John Burns and his grounds crew for the great October course conditions (and for preserving the pin integrity for us between Round 1 and Round 2!)
Net & Gross Division Results
In a fantastic year for participation, we had 48 players make up our 24 teams that battled it out for the 2023 Championship. Thank you to this group of guys who make the MGA and NGC the uniquely special place that it is.
In the Net Division, one team just could not be stopped and finished with a stellar final tally of -18 to capture a 4-shot victory. Edging out 2nd – Mike Reynard & Viktor Grinev (-14) and 3rd – Andrew Neill & Ryan White (-11), congrats and very well played to the team of Bruce Sedlak & Kevin Dick!
And, in the Gross Division, the team that asked the question about winning 4 in a row was able to answer and capture the 2023 title. The leaderboard couldn’t have been much tighter all day with 2nd – Sam Bowmer & Scott Redmond (-8) and Adam Miller & Patrick Escalambre (-5). In the end, with clean, bogey-free, team scorecards for the weekend to finish at -9, James Hsiao & Weston Happ added their names to the Cup once again.
1st – Bruce Sedlak & Kevin Dick (-18) – 110 Chase Points – $70.00 each 2nd – Mike Reynard & Viktor Grinev (-14) – 95 Chase Points – $55.00 each 3rd – Andrew Neill & Ryan White (-11) – 80 Chase Points – $43.00 each T-4th – Matt Nolan & Jim Prendergast (-9) – 65 Chase Points – $16.00 each T-4th – Ron Turner & Eric Stephens (-9) – 65 Chase Points – $16.00 each 6th – Mark Matava & Kyle VonEnde (-8) – 35 Chase Points 7th – Erik Rosales & Edward Clarke (-6) – 20 Chase Points
Stearns Cup: Completion of Round 1 + Round 2 — 9:00 AM Shotgun
Well done making it as far as we could today with the conditions, everyone.
For tomorrow, we will be starting with a 9:00 AM Shotgun start. All groups will remain the same and return to where they left the course today to complete their 1st Rounds (with most groups playing ~6 finishing holes for Round 1). All groups will then continue straight into Round 2, keeping the same groups, and complete their final (Round 2) 18 holes.
At the conclusion of play, we’ll have food in the clubhouse at sometime around 3:30-4:00.
Scoring
All scoring will continue to be collected through the NGC App. We hope that all App scorekeepers from today will be able to pick straight up from where they left their Round 1 digital scorecards and finish Round 1 in the App. All groups will also use the App for Round 2 scoring. (Paper scorecards will be added to each cart if for any reason we run into issues with entering digital scores.)
MGA Tees
All MGA Tees will remain in their current positions overnight for the completion of Round 1 tomorrow. When each group completes their Round 1, we ask that all groups move the MGA tee markers to their Sunday positions directly next to the outlined Red, Gold, White or Blue tees. All Round 2 tee placements are as follows:
Attached you’ll find the groups + starting holes for tomorrow’s 1st round of the 2023 Stearns Cup with a 9:30 AM shotgun start. Additionally, you’ll find the Tournament Rules Sheet which includes the general MGA Tee locations for Saturday & Sunday.
Weather Considerations
Our current plan is to play through any rain that comes our way on Saturday. If the greens become too saturated for play or we run into thunderstorms, we will make alternate arrangements as necessary.
Scoring
All tournament scoring will be handled via the NGC App. The app can be found here for iPhone and here for Android. All groups will be pre-loaded into the App. We ask that each team uses the App to track their playing competitors’ scores by selecting their name in the App.
Team sign-ups close tonight at 8:00 PM for the final MGA major of the season, The Stearns Cup, which is set to be played this Saturday & Sunday, October 14th + 15th.

With the 2023 edition of the NGC Club Championship officially in the books, we’d like to send a wholehearted thank you to all the NGC staff and members who made the weekend a fantastic success. Thank you to Tsehaye for working with the TWGA, SMGA, and MGA to raise this year’s Championship to a new high level for the club. Thank you to Donnee, Seth, and all the pro shop staff’s help throughout the weekend. Thank you to Terry for the great 1st tee announcing. Thank you to Mimi, Germami, and all the clubhouse staff for the food, hospitality, and for making NGC the place we want to spend our best days. Thank you to Jack Sullivan, Vivianne Couts, and James Hsiao for your help bringing together all our NGC golf organizations to make a truly memorable weekend. Finally, thank you to all the members who not only took part in competing but also stayed to enjoy the NGC camaraderie we all love while watching some great golf.
Club Championship Results
Across all of our flights, we saw some fantastic golf and tight battles down the stretch.
In the Women’s Club Championship, Betty Sussmann won the net division in style and Vivianne Couts defended her championship from last year going back-to-back and taking home the 2023 Championship. Vivianne now holds both the Senior Women’s Club Champion and Women’s Club Champion parking spaces!
In the Gold Flight, Jerome Lofton finished off a very impressive weekend at -2 net overall to take the victory by 1 shot over Lloyd “Stim” Stimson who finished at -1 net.
In the National Flight, Mark Matava and Mike Reynard both finished at +4 net to share 1st place honors.
In the Tantallon Flight, Scotty Kimmel captured the well deserved victory coming in at even par net total and edging out Ryan White in a playoff on #1.
Finally, in the Championship Flight, things got very interesting on the 35th hole of the tournament which left Scott Redmond with a 2-shot lead over Patrick Escalambre on #18 tee. With the 2023 title on the line, Scott hit his tee shot to the front fringe and, like a true champion, chipped in for a 2 to close out the Club Championship in style. Great finish and enjoy the parking spot sir!
Well played and congratulations to all our 2023 Champions!
