25 players came out for our 1st Shootout of the 2023 season yesterday and #10 showed her teeth as one of the toughest tee shots around (especially with 24 fellow competitors watching!)… All Net 3s advanced and 3 players chipped off with Net 4s to fill the last 2 spots in the top 9 that made it through to #11. Over the next 8 holes, our eventual last man standing made clutch putts and hit the ball into the stratosphere where “there are no trees” to take the well deserved victory. Congrats and well played to the 1st Shootout victor of the year, Kyle Armstrong!

For Men’s Night this week, the 1st edition of the 2023 Shootout series is here! For our Shootout format on the Back 9, all players meet on the 10th tee at 4:30 PM — please be a few minutes early (around the range / putting green by 4:20 PM) so we can organize everyone’s Back 9 course handicaps.
As a full group (think 25-some), all competitors play #10 together (please mark your ball). The low 9 net scores on #10 progress to the 11th tee. A chip-off will be used to break any ties for who proceeds to #11 (top 9 low net from #10).
On holes 11-18, we eliminate 1 player with the highest net score on each hole: i.e. 9 competitors play #11, 8 competitors play #12…all the the way down to 2 players on the 18th hole. Chip-offs decide tied-for-high-score holes.
The last man standing after #18 has been played is the Shootout winner.
For this week’s Shootout festivities, our special guest Shootout referee is back—current Springfield Golf & Country Club member, 2019 Stearns Cup Champion, former MGA Competition Chair, fantastic match play opponent, and all-around great guy—Mr. Mike Lyons. Mike will handle all handicap calculations, rulings, and chip-off decisions for elimination.
Competition Rules for Men’s Night 5/25
For this week, all Men’s Night competitors start play on the Back 9 teeing off #10 at 4:30 PM using 100% of their Back 9 course handicaps. There is no entry fee for Men’s Night this week and only Points Chase points will be awarded to the top one third of the field. Please be a few minutes early and around the range / putting green by 4:20 PM.
For the Shootout, all players play from white tees and Rule of 75 players (Age + Handicap >= 75) may play golds.
We will be playing the ball DOWN EVERYWHERE and RAKE and PLACE for all bunkers. If your ball ends up in a bunker, you may lift, clean, rake and place within the bunker taking as much relief as necessary to place your ball on a playable bit of sand, no closer to the hole.
Balls marked on the green may be replaced to the side of any aeration holes or “Dollar Spot” fungus/disease, no closer to the hole.
“Dollar Spot” brown-patch areas on the green larger than 2 feet may be considered Ground Under Repair from which putting-line relief may be taken (as far as necessary), no closer to the hole.
Netting in re-sodded areas, drain trenches, and exposed rocks added as topper for drainage systems should be considered Ground Under Repair from which free relief may be taken, no closer to the hole. Additionally, tire tracks, bare areas immediately adjacent to cart paths, and bare areas larger than a club length should be considered Ground Under Repair. DROP within one club-length of the nearest point of relief, no closer to the hole.
Any player who does not meet the MGA 2-in-30 handicap posting policy or has not submitted a written appeal for exemption prior to play to [email protected] if they are unable to meet the requirement, will automatically play as a 0 handicap for Men’s Night.

Memorial Cup Results
In the Net Division, we had an amazingly competitive battle that came down to the final holes. When all the strokes had been tallied, 4 players—Andrew Neill, Dan Ryan, Ed Clarke, and Kevin Gates—ended at +2 net to share T-2nd honors and, finishing at even par net, Matt Nolan took home the well deserved victory. Great playing Matt!
In the Gross Division, a hard fought battle vs. the course left James Hsiao 3rd (+11), Scott Redmond 2nd (+10), and Sam Bowmer 1st (+6) — With the low round of the weekend of 70 on Saturday, very well played Sam and congrats on the victory!
For all Memorial Cup participants, we ask that everyone post their own tournament scores to the GHIN handicap system as “Competition” scores from white tees (and as gold tees for our Rule of 75 players). All postings will be double checked this week and corrected if necessary by the club.
