2022 Stearns Cup Results

2022 Stearns Cup

In a fantastic conclusion to the 2022 MGA major season, one of the best weather weekends of year was the perfect companion to great course conditions, excellent golf, and the camaraderie of team golf. We’d especially like to say thank you to Mr. Stearns for the ongoing legacy he created at NGC and to all the NGC staff who helped make the weekend a huge success. Thank you to Mary Ann and Pete for making sure all our bookkeeping and tournament logistics were perfect. Thank you to John and all his crew for getting the course and greens into great shape. Thank you to Donnee for keeping us organized and always on time with the whistle. Thank you to all the Pro Shop and golf staff who are the lifeblood of the golf course we love. And thank you to Jada, Basil, Chef Lois, Christine, and all the clubhouse staff for all the great food & drink and for always making the clubhouse feel like our 2nd home (because it pretty much is).

Net & Gross Division Results

19 teams battled it out in the 2022 edition of the Stearns Cup and, across the board, we had some very intriguing storylines. In the year of the repeat, word on the street is that the #11 & #12 pond has hired a PR firm for multiple trending “incidents”, but that’s a tale for another day

In the Net Division, the fight for 1st place honors came down to the final holes and, when all was said and done, the team that came to repeat their 2021 victory showed what true champions are made of by capturing the 2022 title. Congratulations to Mike Reynard & Victor Grinev whose White Russian team finished at -14 just edging out the M&M’s Plain team of Myron Gibert & Mel Kince who finished 2nd at -13 and the Busbee/Helmer team of Mike Helmer & Micah Busbee who came in 3rd at -12.

In the Gross Division, one team was looking to threepeat and all others were looking to start a winning streak of their own and take home the cup. After some great golf from the 4 teams who finished under par for the weekend, the Can You Threepeat That? team of James Hsiao & Weston Happ was able to answer the question and take home the 2022 championship. Finishing the weekend bogey-free at -8, Can You Threepeat That? edged out the Dorkless team of Matt Doherty & Calvin Harkless who finished 2nd at -4, the AP🇺🇸⛳️🇨🇦⛳️ team of Adam Miller & Patrick Escalambre who finished 3rd at -3, and the Dirty Birdies team of Jim Sussmann & Brian Carlstrom who finished 4th at -1.

Gross Division

1st – James Hsiao & Weston Happ (-8) – 110 Chase Points – $70.00 each
2nd – Matt Doherty & Calvin Harkless (-4) – 95 Chase Points – $57.50 each

5th – Carlo Ross & Sam Bowmer (+4) – 50 Chase Points – $35.00 each
6th – David Krukowski & Kyle Armstrong (+5) – 35 Chase Points
7th – Andrew Neill & Stephen Franklin Cuevas III (+9) – 20 Chase Points

Net Division

1st – Mike Reynard & Victor Grinev (-14) – 110 Chase Points – $70.00 each
2nd – Myron Gibert & Mel Kince (-13) – 95 Chase Points – $57.50 each
3rd – Mike Helmer & Micah Busbee (-12) – 80 Chase Points – $47.50 each
T-4th – Kevin Dick & Matt Dove (-8) – 65 Chase Points – $37.50 each
T-4th – Scott Kimmel & Ed Clarke (-8) – 65 Chase Points – $37.50 each

Men’s Night 10/13: 1-Man Scramble Front 9 — Competition Rules

Men’s Night 10/13 — 1-Man Scramble Front 9

For Men’s Night this week, we’ll be playing our 1-Man Scramble format on the Front 9. For this format, you get 2 shots off the tee and choose the best one, you then get 2 shots from the next position, choose the best, and so on until you have completed the hole.

Please record gross, individual scramble scores on scorecards with names clearly marked and turn in all completed cards to the Pro Shop. 50% of Front 9 course handicaps apply to calculate net scores — low net score wins.

Competition Rules for Men’s Night 10/13

  • For this week, all Men’s Night competitors play the Front 9 with our 1-Man Scramble format. 50% of Front 9 course handicaps will be used to calculate net scores.
  • Men’s Night rounds may be played at any time on Thursday with an accompanying MGA member. Please check in with the Pro Shop before you tee off. All players play from white tees and Rule of 75 players (Age + Handicap >= 75) may play golds.
  • With the possibility of rain in the forecast, an overall assessment of course playability / availability throughout the day will be used to determine if there has been enough time for Men’s Night play to count submitted scores for an official result.
  • With the nature of our 1-Man Scramble format, we will be playing lift, clean, and place everywherfor all shots including within penalty areas, 1-club length, no closer to the hole. Additionally, all bunkers will be played as Ground Under Repair. If your ball ends up in a bunker, you may either play your ball as it lies (rake and place) or take free relief. To take relief, you must find the nearest point of complete relief outside the bunker and play from within one club-length of that point, no closer to the hole.
  • Sod seams in re-sodded areas, drain trenches, and exposed rocks added as topper for drainage systems should be considered Ground Under Repair from which free relief may be taken, no closer to the hole. Additionally, tire tracks, bare areas immediately adjacent to cart paths, and bare areas larger than a club length should be considered Ground Under RepairDROP within one club-length of the nearest point of relief, no closer to the hole.
  • Tall grass and unmaintained sections of the course may be played as penalty areas. These areas include: the hill between the cart paths for the 4th and 5th holes, right of the 7th hole fairway, surrounding the back and left of the 11th green, right of the 13th fairway and surrounding the 13th green, right of the cart path on the 14th hole, on the hill between the 14th and 16th holes, right of the 15th hole and surrounding the 15th green. In the case you do not find your ball in these areas, follow the standard red penalty area dropping procedure.
  • Any player who does not meet the MGA 2-in-30 handicap posting policy or has not submitted a written appeal for exemption prior to play to [email protected] if they are unable to meet the requirement, will automatically play as a 0 handicap for Men’s Night.
  • Our 1-Man Scramble format is NOT valid for handicap posting purposes.
