Sign-ups continue for our first MGA weekend event of the season, the 2024 Play It Again Tournament, which will be played Saturday, April 20th with a 9:30 AM shotgun start. All weekend MGA tournaments are open to full and weekday NGC members who have paid their $85 MGA dues for the year.
For this tournament, each player’s handicap is used to determine how many mulligans will be allotted during their round. Using their allotted mulligans, each player records their best possible gross score. Net scores will also be calculated by the scoring app for a Net Division. The Rule of 75 (Age + Handicap >= 75) applies for gold tee players. Please sign up using the online registration link. All participants must meet the MGA 2-in-30 handicap posting policy.
To confirm your sign-up, double check for your name on the online leaderboard here.

1st Men’s Night of the 2024 Season — Stableford Front 9
We have officially made it to the eve of the 2024 MGA season. For our 1st Men’s Night tomorrow, we’ll be playing our Stableford format on the Front 9. In addition to the Stableford competition, we’ll be playing a re-run of our free-to-enter Gross/Net skins game based on all submitted Front 9 Stableford scorecards.
Let’s have some fun and get the season started with some low scores!
Men’s Night Groups
Men’s Night rounds may be played at any time on Thursdays with an accompanying MGA member. Men’s Night groups are formed in an impromptu manner with MGA players who arrive around the same time on Thursdays playing together. Most players play their Men’s Night 9-holes around 3PM but we most often have guys playing throughout the day, including some players going off early and some players playing later in the afternoon / early evening. For tomorrow, several MGA Board members will be around the club and course most of the afternoon to introduce themselves to new MGA members and we can help facilitate groups. We hope to keep the camaraderie going after Men’s Night rounds this season with poker and/or other shenanigans around the clubhouse!
GHIN Handicaps
All Men’s Night play (and MGA tournament play) is with handicaps which means all players will need an active GHIN handicap account. If you do not have a GHIN account, let us know at [email protected] and we’ll help you get one set up with the club. Starting April 15th, we will maintain our 2-in-30 posting requirement for 2024. To compete in MGA net competitions with your GHIN handicap, players must maintain 36-holes of posted scores (either full 18 or 9-hole scores) from NGC in the last 30 days. See the “Season Specific Guidelines” within the MGA Handicap Rules & Procedures.
Stableford Format
For this week, points will be awarded based on the standard Stableford scoring breakdown using 100% of individual Front 9 handicaps.
Net Double Bogey or higher: 0 points
Net Bogey: 1 point
Net Par: 2 points
Net Birdie: 3 points
Net Eagle: 4 points, and so on.
All players play from white tees and Rule of 75 players (age + handicap >= 75) may play golds. Please record gross scores for all holes on scorecards with names clearly marked and turn in completed cards to the Pro Shop. There is no entry fee for Men’s Night. Points Chase points will be awarded to the top one-third of the field for Stableford placement and credit book will be awarded to skins winners.
Competition Rules for Men’s Night 4/4
For this week, all Men’s Night competitors play our Stableford format on the Front 9 using 100% of their Front 9 course handicaps. There is no entry fee for Men’s Night this week and only Points Chase points will be awarded to the top one-third of the field. Additionally, we’ll be playing a free-to-enter Gross/Net Skins Game on the Front 9 with credit book payouts awarded to skin winners.
Men’s Night rounds may be played at any time on Thursday with an accompanying MGA member. Please record gross scores for all holes on scorecards with names clearly marked and turn in completed cards to the Pro Shop.
With all the rain we have received this week, we will be playing LIFT, CLEAN, and PLACE in your OWN FAIRWAY, one club-length, no closer to the hole. All BUNKERS will be played as GROUND UNDER REPAIR. If your ball ends up in a bunker, you may either rake and place within the bunker or take free relief outside the bunker. To take relief, you must find the nearest point of complete relief outside the bunker and DROP from within one club-length of that point, no closer to the hole.
All Holes — Shots that land in play but cannot be found because the ball has plugged may be replaced (by dropping a replacement ball) without penalty at the most likely landing spot as determined by the consensus of the player’s fellow group members. For this rule to apply, you must be virtually certain of your landing location and this landing zone cannot be within one club-length of a penalty area or out of bounds.
Balls marked on the green may be replaced to the side of any aeration holes or “Dollar Spot” fungus/disease, no closer to the hole. Additionally, “Dollar Spot” brown-patch areas on the green larger than 2 feet may be considered Ground Under Repair from which putting-line relief may be taken (as far as necessary), no closer to the hole.
Bare areas larger than one club-length, bare areas immediately adjacent to cart paths, and tire tracks should be considered Ground Under Repair. DROP within one club-length of the nearest point of relief, no closer to the hole. Additionally, netting in re-sodded areas, drain trenches, and exposed rocks added as topper for drainage systems should be considered Ground Under Repair from which free relief may be taken, no closer to the hole.
Tall grass and unmaintained sections of the course may be played as penalty areas. These areas include: the hill between the cart paths for the 4th and 5th holes, right of the 7th hole fairway, surrounding the back and left of the 11th green, right of the 13th fairway and surrounding the 13th green, right of the cart path on the 14th hole, on the hill between the 14th and 16th holes, right of the 15th hole and surrounding the 15th green. In the case you do not find your ball in these areas, follow the standard red penalty area dropping procedure.
This week’s format allows for the completion of a 9-hole round that is valid for handicap posting purposes. Men’s Night scores must be posted promptly to your handicap account. Any player who places but has not posted will have their score disqualified from placement consideration.

With the handicap system reopening for Maryland tomorrow, March 15th, I wanted to send a quick note out in anticipation of the upcoming MGA season. I am really excited to get the 2024 season underway and we are going to continue to work hard to protect the integrity of the field for all MGA events. The 2024 MGA Handicap Rules & Procedures documentation lays out what we expect of all of you.
I will leave the highlights here for simplicity:
All MGA members will need a GHIN handicap and should be posting all rounds played while playing postable formats.
Players should post their scores whenever playing 9 or more holes, and should do so in a timely manner.
We will maintain the 2-in-30 posting requirement for 2024 starting April 15th. To compete in MGA net competitions with your GHIN handicap, players must maintain 36-holes of posted scores (either full 18 or 9-hole scores) from NGC in the last 30 days. See the “Season Specific Guidelines” within the Rules & Procedures.
If any MGA Member is unable to meet the 2-in-30 posting requirement for reasons of travel, work, injury, sickness, or the like, they may submit an appeal in writing to the MGA Handicap Committee at [email protected] to request a temporary exemption from the requirement.
Penalties will be given out for failure to post.
Players should post their own scores for all MGA events after the conclusion of play unless instructed otherwise. MGA tournaments should be entered as tournament/competition scores.
The MGA will audit all player handicaps for Men’s Nights and Tournaments. Players who do not follow the posting guidelines or do not meet the 2-in-30 will not be eligible to compete with their GHIN handicaps in net competitions.
If you have any questions about anything, please reach out and we will be happy to assist. Looking forward to another magical MGA season.

Jack, who passed away on February 21, 2023, was a long time NGC member and, alongside his wife Maureen who you’ll often see out hitting balls, was a stalwart of our golf club. He was a wonderful friend to all those who had the privilege of knowing him. His interest in his fellow members was sincere, he would make useful suggestions on the practice range, and he had great stories with a tremendously sharp wit.
Saint Patrick’s Day was Jack’s favorite holiday and, to honor him, let’s have a great day of camaraderie and celebration! A scramble bonus will be available for all those who proudly wear their green ☘️
