Men’s Night 5/5 — Cinco de Mayo: Luchador Solo (1-Man Scramble) Back 9
For Men’s Night this week, we’ll be playing our 1-Man Scramble format on the Back 9. For this format, you get 2 shots off the tee and choose the best one, you then get 2 shots from the next position, choose the best, and so on until you have completed the hole.
Please record gross, individual scramble scores on scorecards with names clearly marked and turn in all completed cards to the Pro Shop. 50% of Back 9 course handicaps apply to calculate net scores — low net score wins.

18 players came out last night to make our 1st Shootout and Steak & Spuds Night of the season a great success. The MGA would like to send a special thank you to Mike Lyons for refereeing the festivities, to Leo Goff for making the Steak Night dream a reality, to Chef Lois and all the kitchen staff for the delicious food, and to the NGC front of house staff who always make NGC a great place to gather with friends.
After the many ups and downs, pressure packed moments, chip-offs, and even a 56º wedge to the shin that was survived by Ed Clarke, Weston Happ walked away as the last man standing and took the Shootout victory.
1st – Weston Happ – 30 Chase Points – $45.00 2nd – Adam Miller (eliminated on #18) – 26 Chase Points – $36.00 3rd – Calvin Harkless (eliminated on #17) – 22 Chase Points – $32.40 4th – James Hsiao (eliminated on #16) – 18 Chase Points – $27.00 5th – Ed Clarke (eliminated on #15) – 14 Chase Points – $21.60 6th – Will Keyes (eliminated on #14) – 10 Chase Points – $18.00
Poker Wrap-Up
In the (quickly becoming) Thursday night tradition like no other, Calvin Harkless, Jared Powell, and Dave Krukowski walked away from the poker shootout cash positive and we all walked away with a new perspective on Kevin Costner.
Sign-ups close in 1 week for our season-long, NCAA-bracket-style, 2022 Match Play Tournament. The cost to participate is $30 and the bracket will be set via a random draw on Thursday, May 5th. Men’s Night 4/28 — Shootout + $10 Steak & Spud Night
For Men’s Night this week, after a very long hiatus, the Shootout is back! For our Shootout format on the Back 9, all players meet on the 10th tee at 4:30 PM — please be a few minutes early so we can organize everyone’s Back 9 course handicaps.
As a full group (think 25-some), all competitors play #10 together (please mark your ball 😂). The low 9 net scores on #10 progress to the 11th tee. A chip-off will be used to break any ties for who proceeds to #11 (top 9 low net).
On holes 11-18, we eliminate 1 player with the highest net score on each hole: i.e. 9 competitors play #11, 8 competitors play #12…all the the way down to 2 players on the 18th hole. Chip-offs decide tied-for-high-score holes.
Last man standing after #18 has been played is the Shootout winner.
For this week’s Shootout festivities, the MGA has brought in a very special guest Shootout referee—current Springfield Golf & Country Club member, 2019 Stearns Cup Champion, former MGA Competition Chair, steak aficionado, and all-around (pretty) good guy—Mr. Mike Lyons. Mike will handle all handicap calculations, rulings, and chip-off decisions for elimination. Please only give him a medium-hard time out there.
Competition Rules for Men’s Night 4/28
For our Shootout format this week, all players start on the 10th tee at 4:30 PM using 100% of their Back 9 course handicaps. All players play from white tees and Rule of 75 players (Age + Handicap >= 75) may play golds.
We will be playing lift, clean and place in your own fairway, one club-length, no closer to the hole. Additionally, all bunkers will be played as Ground Under Repair. If your ball ends up in a bunker, you may either play your ball as it lies (rake and place) or take free relief. To take relief, you must find the nearest point of complete relief outside the bunker and play from within one club-length of that point, no closer to the hole.
Balls marked on the green may be replaced to the side of any aeration holes, no closer to the hole.
All Holes — Shots that land in play but cannot be found because the ball has plugged may be replaced (by dropping a replacement ball) without penalty at the most likely landing spot as determined by the consensus of the player’s fellow group members. For this rule to apply, you must be virtually certain of your landing location and this landing zone cannot be within 1 club-length of a penalty area or out of bounds.
Any player who does not meet the MGA 2-in-30 handicap posting policy or has not submitted a written appeal for exemption prior to play to [email protected] if they are unable to meet the requirement, will automatically play as a 0 handicap for Men’s Night.
$10 Steak & Spuds after Shootout Play
Steak & Spud dinners will be available to order starting at 5:30 PM and the meal-cost for each Shootout participant will be only $10.

Our first weekend MGA tournament of the 2022 season was a great success yesterday. Beautiful weather, fun on the course, great food, and camaraderie was enjoyed by all. Thank you very much to all the players who came out to take part and to all the NGC staff who helped make the day awesome.
We saw some very good play over the course of the day with 6 players shooting even par or better. With rounds of 72 and a tie for 5th, Steve Cuevas and Ted Pearson kicked off their 2022 seasons even with Mr. Par. With a stellar score of 70, Kyle Armstrong reached red figures and got into the house at -2 for the day. Rounds of 68, including 7 birdies from Jared Powell and an eagle on #1 from Adam Miller, gave these two 2021 champions a tie for 2nd. And with a well used mulligan on his birdie putt on #10, Weston Happ shot a 5-under 67 to take the W in the 2022 Play It Again Tournament.
A great field of 29 players came out for our Chicago Men’s Night yesterday and, when all the strokes had been counted, one man came out on top. As the only competitor to surpass his Chicago hurdle and reach +1 point, Adam Miller took home the well deserved victory and 1st place points this week.
In another successful edition of the 2022 post-Men’s-Night festivities, wings were enjoyed, stories were told, cards were dealt, and an interesting theory on how straights may or may not work was proposed. Thank you to all the NGC staff for making Thursdays feel like Thursdays of old and we look forward to seeing everyone next week (4/28) for the Shootout and Steak & Spud Night!
